Federal Financial Participation (FFP)The federal government reimburses states 66% of their allowable child support program expenses. There is no limit to how much the federal government will reimburse states.

Incentive paymentsThe federal government pays states to operate their child support programs efficiently. These payments are performance-based and are shared between the state and its counties.

GrantsThe federal government provides grants to states to support services for children and families.

Child support collected on behalf of familiesStates collect child support on behalf of families who receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) cash assistance. The states use the money to reimburse themselves and return funds to the federal government.
The federal government also outlines certain standards for child support, such as mandatory medical support and income withholding for noncustodial parents.
Women’s and girls’ organizations surpassed $10 billion in giving for the first time, receiving $10.2 billion in philanthropic support during 2021.
